Imagine is a 3-year project that will use the arts to enrich the lives of older care home residents, better involve them in the wider community and support them to connect with people of all ages. The programme is one of only four nationally to be awarded money from Arts Council England and The Baring Foundation’s Arts and Older People in Care fund.

Older people in residential care can often feel isolated and socially excluded. Art can promote a sense of identity, offer new opportunities for self-expression, improve confidence and help people build new friendships.

This project will give older people in care access to the artistic events and performances the rest of us can enjoy. It will offer them the opportunity to be creative and involve them in commissioning new artwork.

We will share what we learn from this project with care homes and arts organisations across the country. It is a fantastic opportunity to put Nottingham on the map and recognise older members of our community, their life experiences and zest for life.

The programme is being run by a consortium including The Abbeyfields Society, City Arts, Nottingham City Council, arts organisations from across the City, and academic researchers from the University of Nottingham.

Performing Gender brings together audiovisual artworks that explore new perspectives of gender and identity in contemporary art.

The works in the exhibition deconstruct, question and criticise the relationships between gender and society through theatrical performance, documentary filmmaking, and experimental film that blur the lines of male-female binary conformity. The body becomes a focus for debate about social boundaries and a quest for non-corporeal identity through which the work is expressed and experienced.

Featuring work by; Matthew Barney, Ana Mendieta, David Wojnarowicz, Ryan Trecartin, Marianna Simnett, Jacolby Satterwhite, Mandy Niewöhner, and Jake Moore.
